Choosing the Right Feather & Down Pillow
Natural pillows can vary considerably in softness, height and support. The proportion of down and feather, the amount of filling and the construction of the pillow all influence how it feels. Rather than choosing by price alone, think about how soft you like your pillow, your sleeping position and how much height you need.
What Does the Down Percentage Mean?
When comparing natural pillows, the filling percentage is useful. A higher proportion of down generally creates a softer, lighter and more luxurious feel, while feather adds more structure and substance to the pillow.
High Down Content
Higher-down pillows have a particularly soft and lofty character. They can be gently shaped and plumped around the head and are ideal for sleepers who enjoy a softer natural pillow.
Feather & Down Blend
Combining feather with down introduces additional structure while retaining the softness and adaptable character of natural filling.
Pillow Height & Your Sleeping Position
The right pillow should comfortably fill the space between your head and mattress. Your sleeping position is a useful starting point, but shoulder width, body shape, mattress firmness and how deeply you sink into the bed also affect the height you need.
Side Sleepers
Side sleepers generally need enough pillow height to fill the space created by the shoulder. A fuller natural pillow or greater filling volume may therefore feel more suitable.
Back Sleepers
Back sleepers commonly prefer a moderate pillow profile that supports the head without pushing it excessively forward. A mouldable natural filling can make the height easier to adjust.
Front Sleepers
Front sleepers often prefer less height. A softer pillow that compresses easily may be preferable to a high or very substantial pillow.
Feather & Down, Latex or Memory Foam?
There isn't one pillow material that's right for everyone. Each provides a noticeably different sleeping experience.
Feather & Down
Soft, plumpable and adaptable. Choose natural filling if you enjoy a traditional pillow that can be reshaped and adjusted by hand.
Latex
More responsive and resilient, latex maintains its shape and provides a springier, more consistent level of support.
Memory Foam
Memory foam contours more slowly around the head and neck and is suited to sleepers who prefer a more moulded, cushioning sensation.
Don't Choose Your Pillow Without Considering Your Mattress
A softer mattress allows your shoulder and body to sink further into the bed, which can reduce the pillow height you need. On a firmer mattress you may remain higher above the sleeping surface. This is why the same feather or down pillow can feel completely different when tried on two different mattresses.
Caring for a Feather & Down Pillow
Regularly plumping and airing a natural pillow helps redistribute the filling and restore its loft. A pillow protector can also help protect the outer cover during everyday use. Always follow the individual manufacturer's care instructions before washing or drying, as requirements can differ between natural-filled pillows.
