Choosing the Right Soft Pillow
Choosing a soft pillow is about more than finding the least firm option. The pillow still needs to provide a comfortable sleeping height once it has compressed beneath your head. Your sleeping position, shoulder width, mattress and preferred filling can all influence which softer pillow feels right.
Soft Pillows & Sleeping Position
There isn't one pillow firmness that is automatically correct for every sleeping position. What matters is where your head settles once the pillow is compressed.
Side Sleepers
Side sleepers generally need enough effective pillow height to accommodate the shoulder. A soft pillow can work well, but it needs sufficient filling so it doesn't compress too far for the individual sleeper.
Back Sleepers
Back sleepers often prefer a moderate sleeping height. A softer pillow can allow the head to settle into the filling rather than remaining high above the mattress.
Front Sleepers
Front sleepers generally require less pillow height. Softer, more compressible pillows may therefore be worth considering, although individual comfort remains important.
Your Mattress Affects Your Pillow Choice
Pillow and mattress should be considered together. On a softer mattress your shoulders and body may sink further into the bed, which can reduce the pillow height you need. A firmer mattress generally allows less sink and can change how the same pillow feels. This is one reason trying a pillow on a mattress can be more useful than simply squeezing it by hand.
Different Ways to Create a Softer Pillow
Two pillows can both be described as soft while feeling completely different. Filling and construction determine how the pillow compresses, responds and recovers.
Feather & Down
Natural-filled pillows can provide a soft, adaptable sensation and can usually be reshaped and plumped to change how the filling sits beneath your head.
EXPLORE FEATHER & DOWN →Fibre & Hotel-Style
Fibre-filled pillows can offer soft, familiar cushioning and are available in many different constructions and price levels for everyday bedrooms and guest rooms.
Foam-Based Pillows
Foam pillows provide a different sensation, with the material responding around the head rather than behaving like a traditional loose-filled pillow.
EXPLORE MEMORY FOAM →Soft or Firm Pillow?
Neither firmness level is automatically better. The difference is primarily in how much resistance and compression you prefer beneath your head.
Softer Pillow
Gives way more readily under pressure and allows the head to settle further into the pillow.
Firmer Pillow
Offers greater resistance to pressure and generally maintains more of its height beneath the head.
EXPLORE FIRM PILLOWS →Can a Pillow Be Too Soft?
Yes. If a pillow compresses too far for your sleeping position, mattress and body shape, you may simply prefer more height or resistance. Equally, a pillow that is too firm or too high can feel uncomfortable. The aim is to find the combination of softness and sleeping height that feels right for you.
