LEO’S RUG BUYING GUIDE
How to Choose the Right Rug
The right rug can completely change a room — adding warmth, softness, colour and helping to bring your furniture together. But choosing the right size, material, pile and style is just as important as choosing the design.
At Leo’s, we’ve been helping customers choose rugs for homes across the Costa Blanca for over 30 years. In this guide, we’ll explain what to look for and help you find a rug that works with your room, furniture and everyday lifestyle.

What Should You Consider When Buying a Rug?
Don’t choose a rug on colour alone. Four things can make the difference between a rug that simply looks good and one that really works in your room.
Size
The proportions of the rug should work with your room and furniture. One of the most common mistakes is choosing a rug that’s too small.
Material
Wool, synthetic and natural fibres all feel and perform differently. Think about comfort, maintenance and where the rug will be used.
Pile & Texture
Short pile, long pile and flatter woven rugs create very different looks and feels — and some are better suited to busy rooms than others.
Colour & Style
Your rug can quietly bring a room together or become its main feature. Consider your flooring, sofa, furniture and overall interior style.
RUG SIZE GUIDE
What Size Rug Do I Need?
A rug that’s too small can make a room feel disconnected. In most spaces, a slightly larger rug will help the furniture feel more balanced and make the whole room look more considered.
LIVING ROOM
Anchor the Seating Area
In a living room, the rug should visually connect the sofa, chairs and coffee table rather than sit like a small island in the middle of the floor.
Good rule: where possible, allow at least the front legs of the sofa and chairs to sit on the rug.
DINING ROOM
Leave Room for the Chairs
A dining rug should be large enough for the table and chairs to remain comfortably on the rug, even when the chairs are pulled out.
Good rule: choose a rug that extends well beyond the edge of the table so chair legs don’t catch on the rug edge.
BEDROOM
Add Softness Around the Bed
In the bedroom, a rug works best when enough of it is visible around the sides and foot of the bed to create a soft, comfortable area underfoot.
Good rule: use a larger rug under the lower part of the bed, or use runners on each side if you prefer a lighter look.
LEO’S TIP
When in Doubt, Go Slightly Larger
A larger rug usually helps a room feel more generous and connected, while a rug that’s too small can make the furniture appear separate. Measure your room and furniture before buying, rather than relying only on the rug size itself.
How to Measure Before Buying a Rug
A few minutes with a tape measure can prevent the most common rug-buying mistake.
Note the overall room dimensions and any doors, walkways or fixed furniture.
Measure your sofa, dining table or bed so the rug works with the furniture, not just the floor space.
Use masking tape on the floor to outline the proposed rug size and see how it feels before ordering.

Choosing the Right Rug for a Home on the Costa Blanca
Buying a rug for a home in Spain isn’t always the same as choosing one for a home in Northern Europe. Our warmer climate, tiled and stone floors, open-plan rooms and indoor-outdoor lifestyle can all influence which rug works best.
With over 30 years of experience working with rugs from manufacturers around the world, we’ve learnt which materials, pile heights, designs and finishes work particularly well in homes here on the Costa Blanca.
DESIGN
Keep It Light & Versatile
Plain designs, natural colours and subtle textures work particularly well with the light interiors, stone floors and relaxed Mediterranean styling found in many Costa Blanca homes.
PILE
Think About Everyday Living
A good-quality short or medium pile can provide softness underfoot without making a room feel too heavy. They’re also practical around furniture and in regularly used living spaces.
QUALITY
Look Beyond the Colour
The quality of the fibres, density, backing, edging and professional finishing all matter. A well-made rug should look good not only when it’s new, but continue to perform well with regular use.
PRACTICALITY
Choose for Your Lifestyle
A permanent home, holiday apartment, rental property and family villa may all need something different. How the room is used should be part of the decision, not an afterthought.
A QUESTION WE’RE OFTEN ASKED
Why Don’t More Homes in Spain Have Wool Carpets?
Wool isn’t unsuitable for Spain — in fact, a high-quality wool rug can be an excellent choice. But wall-to-wall carpet is less common in the warmer Spanish climate, where tiled, stone and other hard floors are widely used.
A rug gives you the best of both worlds: you keep the practical hard flooring while adding softness, texture, comfort and definition exactly where the room needs it. Wool rugs can be particularly attractive when you want a natural, premium finish.
Are Our Rugs Easy to Clean?
It depends on the material and construction, which is why we don’t believe one type of rug is right for every home.
For busy living areas, family homes and properties where easy everyday maintenance is important, a good-quality short pile rug can be an excellent option. The lower pile makes regular vacuuming straightforward and there is less deep pile for everyday dust and debris to settle into.
