How to Choose the Right Sofa Bed: Comfort, Sizes & Interior Design Ideas

A sofa bed can be one of the most useful pieces of furniture in your home. But after more than 30 years helping customers furnish properties on the Costa Blanca, there’s one thing we strongly believe: not all sofa beds are created equal.

Some look attractive but are uncomfortable to sit on. Others make perfectly acceptable occasional guest beds but aren’t ideal for frequent overnight use.

The best sofa bed is the one that works beautifully in your room every day and provides the right sleeping comfort when your guests arrive.

In this guide, we’ll explain the differences between mattress systems, mechanisms, sofa sizes, modular configurations, fabrics and design options — with examples from our own collection at Leo’s Superstore in Altea.

Our experience

What Makes a Sofa Bed Worth Buying?

Our advice is to start by asking two questions: How often will you sit on it? And how often will someone sleep on it?

For a sofa used every day in your main living room, seating comfort, cushion quality and appearance are essential. For frequent overnight guests, the mattress and opening mechanism become equally important.

Our Personal View

We would rather recommend a sofa bed with a well-designed mechanism and a comfortable mattress than one that simply looks impressive in a photograph.

And we don’t believe you should automatically choose the biggest sofa available. The correct proportions and configuration can make a smaller room feel much more comfortable and attractive.

This is why we encourage customers to visit our showroom and compare the different designs in person.

Sleeping comfort

Does Mattress Thickness Really Matter?

A sofa bed mattress is one of the most important features to compare, especially if the bed will be used frequently. But thickness alone doesn’t guarantee comfort: construction, support and the sleeping mechanism all matter.

Occasional Sleeping

For visitors staying just a few nights each year, a simple guest-bed solution may be perfectly adequate. Easy operation and practical dimensions may be your main priorities.

Regular Guests

When family and friends visit often, we recommend looking more carefully at the mattress, support system and how comfortable the bed feels over several nights.

Premium Sofa Beds

Some of our higher-specification models feature substantial mattresses, including the 16cm Nadir and 18cm Grace systems. These are worth comparing for more demanding use.

Our Advice

If overnight comfort is important, don’t judge a sofa bed by its outside dimensions or appearance alone. Ask to see the mattress, try the bed and understand what supports it.

Practical design

Understanding Sofa Bed Opening Mechanisms

The mechanism determines how easily your sofa converts into a bed, how much room it needs and how the sleeping surface is supported.

Italian Opening Systems

Found in selected premium collections, these systems are designed to convert a sofa into a separate sleeping surface without having to rearrange the entire room.

Pull-Out Sofa Beds

Pull-out systems provide a practical solution for occasional guests. Their construction and mattress arrangements vary, so it’s important to test the exact model.

Convertible Seating

Some sofas use fold-down or convertible seating to create a sleeping area. These can be useful for smaller spaces, although comfort varies between designs.

Whichever mechanism you choose, we recommend opening and closing it yourself before ordering. A sofa bed should be practical for the person who will actually use it.

Sizes and layouts

Every Sofa Bed Configuration Explained

One of the biggest misconceptions about sofa beds is that they are all small, straight two- or three-seater sofas. Modern collections offer far more flexibility than that.

Compact Sofa Beds

Ideal for smaller apartments, home offices and guest rooms. The priority is comfortable seating without overwhelming the room.

Standard Sofa Beds

A versatile choice for living rooms, with everyday seating and a practical bed for visitors.

Extra-Large Sofa Beds

For homes where guests need a more generous sleeping surface, selected models offer larger mattress sizes and wider sofa compositions.

Chaise Longue Sofa Beds

Combining relaxed lounge seating with additional sleeping capacity. Selected designs may also include useful storage features.

Corner Sofa Configurations

Well suited to larger rooms, open-plan living areas and villas. Check which modules contain the actual sleeping mechanism.

Modular Sofa Collections

A flexible approach to furnishing. Selected ranges allow you to combine different seating sections, chaise units and sofa bed modules.

One Important Measurement People Forget

Always measure the sofa in both positions: closed and fully opened. Allow space for doors, circulation and other furniture.

For apartments, also check lift, staircase and entrance dimensions before placing your order.

Materials and maintenance

Choosing the Right Fabric for Costa Blanca Living

We regularly help customers choose furniture for homes that experience strong natural light, warm weather, visiting family, pets and holiday use.

A beautiful fabric is important, but we believe practicality should be considered at the same time.

  • Removable covers can make cleaning easier.
  • Washable fabrics are useful for family and holiday homes.
  • Stain-resistant upholstery can be practical for busy properties.
  • Linen-look textures work beautifully with Mediterranean interiors.
  • Consider sunlight exposure when choosing colours and materials.
  • Always follow the care instructions for the selected fabric.

Many of our sofa collections offer different fabric and colour choices, allowing you to personalise the finished design.

How to Make a Sofa Bed Look Beautiful in Your Home

A sofa bed should complement your interior rather than look like a temporary solution.

For modern Costa Blanca homes, we particularly like the balance of natural textures, soft neutral colours and comfortable proportions.

Mediterranean Apartment

Choose warm linen, sand or off-white upholstery with a light-coloured rug, natural wood furniture and simple accessories.

Luxury Villa

Consider a larger modular composition, generous cushions, layered lighting and a statement rug to create a welcoming main seating area.

Guest Room or Home Office

Use a compact sofa bed with a side table, reading lamp and discreet storage to create a room that works beautifully even when no guests are staying.

Our Favourite Design Principle

Don’t design the whole room around the sofa bed being open. Design a beautiful living space first, then make sure the sleeping arrangement works comfortably when needed.

Frequently asked questions

Common Questions About Choosing a Sofa Bed

Are modern sofa beds comfortable enough for regular sleeping?

Some are, but comfort varies between models. For regular overnight use, pay particular attention to mattress construction, support and the opening mechanism. We recommend trying the bed before buying.

What is the best mattress thickness for a sofa bed?

There is no single ideal thickness. A substantial mattress can improve comfort, but its materials and support system matter too. Our Grace and Nadir collections feature 18cm and 16cm mattresses respectively.

Can a sofa bed have a chaise longue?

Yes. Selected collections offer chaise longue and modular configurations alongside integrated sofa bed mechanisms. Check the exact arrangement available for each model.

Can I customise the size of my sofa bed?

Many of our ranges offer different widths, configurations, fabrics and colours. Customisation options depend on the collection.

Are removable sofa covers worth having?

They can be particularly practical for family homes, properties with pets and holiday rentals. Always check the cleaning instructions for your chosen fabric.

Are sofa beds suitable for holiday rental properties?

Yes. They can provide additional sleeping capacity while keeping the living room useful throughout the day. Consider durability, ease of operation and sleeping comfort.

Should I choose a sofa bed or a normal sofa?

Choose a sofa bed when extra sleeping accommodation is genuinely useful. If you never need the bed function, a conventional sofa may offer more flexibility in your choice of design and seating.

Do you offer large sofa beds?

Yes. Selected models offer generous sofa widths and larger sleeping mattresses. For example, our Nadir collection includes multiple sizes and configurations.

Can I try sofa beds before buying?

Yes. Visit Leo’s Superstore in Altea to view and try selected models. Contact us if you want to confirm which particular sofa beds are currently on display.

Do you deliver sofa beds across the Costa Blanca?

Yes. We provide local delivery throughout our service area, including Altea, Albir, Alfaz del Pi, Benidorm, Calpe and surrounding towns. Delivery arrangements vary by model and location.

Can Ohana help design a room around my new sofa?

Yes. Ohana Interior Design Studio offers interior styling, furniture sourcing and complete furnishing services for Costa Blanca homes.
